Why You Need Emergency Evacuation Systems in Mines

Safety and risk mitigation are the foremost considerations in the design, planning, and operation of underground mines. Emergency evacuation systems can help miners find their way out of a mine if there is an emergency. These systems include Fire detection systems, early warning systems and evacuation systems.

Safety considerations and hazards mitigation are the foremost factors in the planning and operation of underground mines

Various technologies are available in underground mining, such as gas detection devices and ventilation systems. These technologies help enhance worker safety and security. Emergency evacuation systems such as early warning systems (Frontline®) and guided rope systems (Lifeline®) are key to saving lives in the event of an emergency such as a fire. Another important consideration is the emergency escape route and plan.  Emergency evacuation training is fundamental.

Fire detection systems are designed to detect fires

Mines have a high risk of fires, resulting in significant losses and damage. There is no one way to prevent fires in mines, and many underground structures are unique. Therefore, a good detection system is vital for any mine. Fire detection systems have several advantages, including increased safety and efficiency. They allow early intervention in fire emergencies and can reduce property damage, personal injury, and loss of life. These systems use electronic sensors to detect heat, smoke, other gasses and flames.

Guide rope systems are designed to help miners find their way out of a mine during a fire

Rescue One manufactures an early warning system (Frontline®), that is connected to a mine’s existing fire detection system. The intent of Frontline® is to get mining personnel to a place of safety before zero visibility is reached in the event of a fire.

If a fire has already spread and zero visibility is reached, guide rope (Lifeline®) is used to guide miners to their refuge bays.  Rescue One holds the patent to Lifeline® in South Africa.

A directional guide rope (Lifeline®) is rope fitted with directional cones that can guide miners to their refuge bays and help them find the direction of escape in case of a mine disaster such as fire.

Rescue One specialises in early warning systems and guide rope systems (Lifeline®).  Contact us for more information on our emergency evacuation systems!
